Love what Hathaway have brought to the Caps. I feel like 1.5mil/year is a steal for given his production thus far

He was a really good 4th liner IMO. I think the Flames miss him.

Better or worse than Lucic so far?

Agree with other commenters on here that Hathaway was a steal for the Caps at $1.5M/year. He was underutilized with the Flames and plays solid, two-way hockey with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He crushed it in the AHL and is maybe a year away from truly elevating his NHL game.

he was the new bouma, we'll find another one.

but ya right now that energy player feels like the gap thats needed on the team.

I dunno, trade Janko for Virtanen or Benson or something. couple players that might grow with a change

I think Lucic has brought more of the pure toughness the team needed, but Hathaway was a very useful penalty killer and energy guy. I think Rieder will fill that gap, so really in the end, I think the Flames found replacements for what Hath brought, albeit while paying Lucic $4M more...

I'd be fine with dealing Janko too, I sense that he's seen the writing on the wall in terms of the Flames depth chart anyways...

Not to mention he was a throw in on the Kadri non trade so, he definitely knows the Flames aren't committed to him.

Hathaway wasnt a heavy weight like Lucic is so you cant really compare. I still think we need a Hathaway for that 4 th line & kinda wish we had kept him over Czarnick or Janko. But when we signed Rinaldo, what I saw in preseason, Rinaldo is the same kind of energy guy as Hathaway. Problem is we cant bring anyone up because we have no fcking cap space!!

I think Tre needs to move Frolik, even for limited futures so we gain some cap space. I liked what Quine did in Anaheim.

I would also like to see the following pairings:

Gio/Brodie (cause it works fine)
Hanifin/Andersson
Kyllington/Hamonic

Lucic still can intimidate and that's why the trade was made (well partially), Hathaway didn't. He'd go with pretty much anyone but wasn't going to scare really anyone when on the ice- a team guy for sure and I hope he has a long career. I liked him but that's a role that's easily replaced...

I think if Tre could have, he would have moved Frolik. I think the guy can still play the game and could be effective, just not on this roster. He's worth something more than futures and I think that's the dilemma.

I think Janko's time is coming to an end on this team. I think he's trying to figure out his game and what he is and at times just looks lost. He's a big body that doesn't play big but doesn't have the skill set to play a speed game.

I agree he's trying to find his game, but I think he can play the speed game if needed (he didn't get all those SH goals being slow and not knowing how to shoot). If anything, almost indicates he plays better with more room to skate then being a big body

Agreed, there isn't a comp out there between Looch and Hathaway, but that wasn't really my point. Lucic is bringing more of what we needed last year from a physical perspective, but I think Rieder (right now) is bringing the energy/speed/pk end of things, and is as likely to score as Hath was here as well.. All in all, I don't think the Flames miss what Hathaway brought, so much as there are some passengers on the team that need to go.

Also agree that they should find a home for Frolik sooner than later. Rinaldo will be the guy that sticks in Stockton for all/most of the year, I wouldn't expect to see much of him whether we have cap space or not.

Yeah for those comparing Hath and Lucic, Hathaway is not a fighter and not even close to a heavy weight. He can hit, but he is not intimidating.

He's more of an agitator than intimidator. And he had some offensive skills and was good defensively. I liked that he played with aggression and wasn't afraid to get into the nasty business.

Yeah I agree Janko's time is coming up here but I would think there are teams that would roll the dice & give the Flames a decent return. I think Quine/Dube & Gawdin are about to leap frog him as well. Best move him before that happens.

Moving Frolik without taking salary back is near impossible so probably better to be patient. I personally would waive him and see if anyone claims him as I think the cap space we would gain would be more valuable than him as a player. I doubt he gets claimed though.

Honestly before we ship this guy out he should be given a chance to rise up. Sink or swim I think he should be given a top 6 chance. I love Benny and I hope he finds his confidence to stick in the top 6 but he has been given chance after chance in a top 6 role. When has Janko ever been given an opportunity on a top 6 line?

As I remember he has only been allowed to center the top line once with Jonny in a no meaning game at the end of the season game in Winnipeg where he scored 4 goals ..... I am not say he is a #1 center or even a #2 center but I would hope he would be given a chance to see if he could produce at a higher level.

Hell ... even Neal and Lucic have been given a chance in the top 6 so I would hope the Flames would give him at least a look before shipping him out. I would hate to see him leave to go somewhere else and score 9 goals in 9 games or something like that.

Might be the trade of the century if BT pulled that off.

Yeah, Hath has been good for us so far. Seems like he can be even better. Brian Mac did well I thought this past off-season.

Hes been terrible. Gives possession up all the time with his dumb passing. This team is brutal, just cant put the puck in the net, they need a more skilled player in their top 6
